5 Toy Shopping Tips for Your Kids

When you shop toys for your little child, this is when your inner child gets overwhelmed with joy. The whole experience revives the memories of your childhood.

While you are out there shopping for your little bundle of joy, it is extremely important that you buy only the best toys. And, all the toys of the world don’t qualify as the ‘best’ if they are not safe.

I’ve got your back when you are looking out for all the points on the toy safety checklist. I’ve penned down the best toy shopping tips to make the whole experience a fun and an easy one!

Remember when you get befuddled by looking at so many toys in front of you, just keep your calm and use my tips!

1) Safety first

You can give your attention to other chores only when you know that your child is secure. It becomes very important to buy playthings that have no sharp edges and will not cause choking. Besides these two things, you should keep in mind the below points:

a) Always buy toys that label the use of non-toxic materials.

b) It has been seen that toys with loud volume can cause loss of hearing in kids. So, parents should avoid buying toys for kids that are too loud.

c) Also, don’t prefer toys with cords and elastic bands as they might cause strangulation.

2) Age befitting toys

It is very important to buy toys, which are age and gender appropriate for your kids. For instance, buying a Barbie for your baby boy will not make much sense, whereas gifting the same to your baby girl will make her the happiest.

The interesting thing is what grabs the attention of your kid when he is two will differ from when he is eight years old. This is because the learning abilities in kids vary from age-to-age. So, try to find the playthings for your little ones that can actually intrigue them and motivate them.

Every toy comes with age reference, so while purchasing them; just keep in mind the age of your child and his/her capability to understand things.

3) Significant learning for lifetime

The playthings give your juniors the opportunity to learn without being in any constraints and structured environment. Though kids are constantly learning from birth, but the age between one and two years is crucial and significant for development. This is the time for them to learn about their surroundings and enhance their skills. So, mommies and daddies make sure to add a toy in your cart that promotes learning, for instance, games wherein kids have to respond to the questions using the cognitive skills.

4) Let their motor skills blossom

For children, fine motor skills start developing at the infancy stage only and as they are about to complete two years, these skills can be distinctly seen. Such abilities keep on blossoming till kids reach their adulthood. Therefore, it is very essential to buy those toys for your kids that promote the use of their hands and fingers.

There are many toys available in the market for motivating the motor skills of your child. For instance, legos, coloring, board games, art and craft ones, and so forth. These toys are engaging and as little ones involve their fingers and hands, these are sure to enhance their skills, which will be later helpful in their school calligraphy, art & craft competitions, and more.

5) Let their imagination soar

Toys give children a space where they can act silly, pointless and can be whatever they wish to be. Toys not only give kids a way to explore their imagination, but also help in letting their imagination take a flight. Playthings give them their space and a chance to act crazy. When a child turns two, it is the start of the evolution of a genius mind and by the next year, this evolution comes into full effect. During this important mental development phase, give your child the toy that will help spark their imagination and bring their ideas into reality. Ways to foster creativity in your kids are sketching, painting, puzzles, board games, etc. Besides these, there are some pretend toys available in the market that help children become someone else for instance, a superhero, a teacher, a doctor or anything of their choice.

This article is to make toy-shopping fun for parents and fruitful for their kids.

Happy toy shopping to keep your little one busy, out-of-your-hair and make them learn a few lessons while having fun!

Online Shopping Tips: Shop Baby Boutiques Online and Save Your Time, Nerves and Money

These days, we shop online for just about everything. This includes boutique girls clothing, diapers, formulay, gifts and anything else we might need or wont. But until now we haven’t given much thought about the reasons why we enjoy the online shopping experience. Sure there are the obvious reasons of not having to get dressed, packing into the car and dedicating the few hours needed to search through your baby’s favorite stores. Now, if you are with your child trying to accomplish the above-mentioned, you may need to call ahead to have your hubby ready a hot bath with a glass (or bottle) of wine. And if your hubby was nice enough to take the kids off your hands for a few hours so you could go shopping; wouldn’t you want to take that time and shop for yourself instead? Sure you would! So here are some reasons why shopping for baby clothes online is such a great idea:

  1. Stay at home – Don’t battle the parking gods or wait in line for something. Simply relax and let your mouse do the walking. There are hundreds of websites that sell clothes and baby accessories. Each one is only a click away. They are never closed nor are they ever rude. And if you have any questions, shoot them an email or call and have all your questions answered right there and then!
  2. Browse the largest and best selections – How many stores would one have to visit in order to look through enough baby outfits, sweaters, blankets, socks, hats, bottoms, sleep sacs and more in order to get that perfect catch? And how long would it take? Online, you get access to hundreds of retailers. That’s like visiting a mall dedicated to all of your baby and toddler clothing needs!
  3. Get the best prices – This one is our favorite. So you stayed home and found something you like – great! Most websites offer free shipping so you have an opportunity to save a few bucks there. Often there is a special 1st-time customer discount. There are even sites out there who have returning customer discounts. Then there is that magical promo code field. Most people overlook this feature. However, if you have a few minutes to do a quick search, you could save additional dough. All you need to do is search for the site name and the words “promo code” or “discount coupon” right behind it. Before you know it you are patting yourself on the back and marveling at the huge chunk of change you just saved! Oh, we almost forgot to mention that you don’t have to pay sales tax if purchasing from out-of-state. And if you are wondering, yes, we are always running cool promotions.
  4. Freedom to change your mind – So, the handsome UPS man arrives at your door and drops off a small box. “Yayyyyy!” you scream only to find that the size of the cutest baby clothes you picked doesn’t fit your rug rat. The solution here is simple – contact the company and request to exchange your purchase. They will often times do the exchange for free or at a very nominal fee. There is a word of caution here: you should be familiar with the clothing boutique’s return policy before placing your order. This seems like a lot to worry about at first; but once you find the boutiques that cater to your tastes (and have a favorable return policy), your shopping needs should be met for a long time to come.

Ecommerce Versus Bricks and Mortar Shopping

One can’t ignore 95,000,000 monthly visitors to Amazon. And, one cannot ignore the fact that 95% of Americans shop or will shop at Walmart. Ecommerce is set to grow 200% over the next five years. It has grown 38% over the past three months in the USA alone, in comparison to Walmart’s online rate of just 11%. Macys, Sears and Walmart are closing stores citing competition from Amazon as a major factor of declining sales. However Nordstrom have taken up the challenge, 25% of their business is online and they have set the bench mark for other traditional bricks and mortar retailors to follow. Ecommerce is an opportunity not a threat, it’s not a passing trend and it’s here to stay. The number of people that venture into stores to touch and feel is shrinking. Transport costs and parking fees continue to rise and access becomes more time consuming. Anti-social behaviour in and around the cities and shopping malls continues to worsen, all of these factors are driving more and more customers online.

Amazon has taken another gigantic step buying a bricks and mortar super market chain for an estimated 34 billion. The sole reason for this decision is to improve the online groceries service by guaranteeing two hour delivery. Groceries will be delivered from the closest store according to zip code. In addition to this brave move they are trialling a supermarket with no check outs in Seattle, after the technology has been trialled and perfected Amazon will roll this out into all stores. Rather than setting themselves up against well-established competition they have used innovation to drive them beyond any competition. Another example is Elon Musk; his fearless approach to the future via technology has opened new consumer doors. His electronic cars will have a dramatic effect on traditional gas powered vehicles. We have to break from the shackles of the of mentally “if it aint broke don’t fix it”

When it comes to ecommerce, Australia lags more than a decade behind and it will take another decade for them to catch up. Many local brands have gone into administration over the past two years, Herringbone, Marcs, David Lawrence, Rhodes and Becket, Oroton. British retail Giant, Top Shop and Top Man, failed and after two years of poor trading their closed their doors. The two and only department stores are struggling in the face of online competition. Myer shares have dropped from $4.00 to 53 cents in four years and David Jones shares have dropped 45% in three years. Myer’s online business equates to less than 1% and David Jones is currently at 2.6%. Both online stores are clunky, awkward to navigate and out of date and delivery times are greater than delivery times from stores in the USA and UK. The rule of thumb is at least 10% of your retail business must be online. Both are competitor focused and mimic one another. There is no sign of innovation, just one sale after another; they have become bargain basement style. Recently Textile Traders have announced they will close all stores and trade purely online, similarly Airflex will close all but flagship stores and focus more attention online. And, finally let’s be honest, service standards in Australian department stores are way below average. Under staffed, poorly trained, poorly paid and managed under archaic hierarchy mentality. You may as well put a large sign in the window saying shop online

A customer in Australia can purchase $1,000 worth of articles from Nordstrom in the USA and have it delivered to the door within 5 days; you pay no duty or tax and get a lot more for a lot less. Shop online at Amazon and the choices are infinite and the service is simply amazing. The psychology behind online shopping is there are no human barriers to confront you, you simply choose, click and pay and wait for the surprise.

So what are your choices? drive to the local mall, search thirty minutes for a parking spot that’s probably going to set you back about $25.00, argue with your wife, get served by some pushy commissioned based sales person with no product knowledge. More than half the day is gone and it’s been a waste of time. We’ve all had this kind of unpleasant experience. Now, you can save a lot of time and money by shopping online and use the time and money you have saved to take your family out for a pleasant lunch and enjoy some quality time together.

Shopping for a New Water Heater

If your water heater is getting older, it’s a good idea to shop for a replacement before you run out of hot water, or worse… wake up ankle-deep in it!

Take note of the energy sources available to you, and the amount of hot water you expect to use. Not every form of energy will work with every kind of heating appliance and some work slower than others. Tanks work with solar, electricity, oil and gas (natural or propane) but tankless units work with only electricity and gas sources. Heat pumps use only electricity.

Estimate how much hot water your household uses during peak hours and look for a heater with a first hour rating (FHR) that meets your demand. A licensed plumber is the best person to make this calculation and help you choose the right size.

Hot water can add up to 25% of your energy bill, so be sure to choose an energy efficient heating appliance.

Storage tank

This is the most common in residential applications, heating and storing hot water until needed. When you open a faucet, the released hot water is replaced by incoming cold water, which is heated and stored again at a temperature controlled by one or more thermostats in the tank.

Storage tanks are simple, maintenance-free and relatively inexpensive to install – but due to constant reheating they use energy 24/7 even if you’re not running any hot water. Electrically heated tanks can be covered with an insulating blanket to help save energy, but not gas or oil-fired tanks.

Tankless

Tankless water heaters, also known as “on demand” heaters, heat water without a storage tank, using energy only when needed – rather than maintaining a tank of hot water. Sometimes individual units are used in a number of locations throughout a house, but most newer homes have one high-output tankless heater to supply hot water throughout the home.

Due to the storage volume of hot water tanks, and the high-output nature of tankless heaters, both are commonly used for heating a home with in-floor radiant systems or through a radiator coil in a forced-air heating system.

Heat pump (hybrid)

Heat pump water heaters are not directly heated. They use electricity to pump heat from the air or the ground to your water tank, using less energy than traditional water heaters.

You can install a standalone heat pump water heater or combine your water heater with your heating and cooling system, employing an air or ground source heat pump. Although installation costs are higher, heat pump water heaters cost less to run over the longer term.

Solar

Solar collectors can be used to harness the sun’s energy and heat your water almost for free! Solar water heaters use a primary tank for storing pre-heated water before it is transferred to a conventional hot water tank, operating on electricity, gas or oil.

Solar collectors can be installed on roofs or on stands at ground level. Shop for a better quality, energy efficient model which will last longer and save money.

Features to Consider

  • Warranty: Typically three to twelve years. Purchase prices are closely tied to warranties, and longer warrantied water heaters tend to be better built and better insulated. In addition to choosing a water heater with a good warranty, check consumer reporting websites and reviews from individual owners.

  • Anti-scale devices: Although scale can shorten the life of a water heater, you don’t need to invest in extra features to get a dependable water heater. Just buy a good quality tank with a good warranty.

  • Brass vs. plastic drain valves: Near the base of the water heater, these valves are used to periodically drain sediment from the bottom of a tank. Brass drain valves are more durable than plastic.

  • Glass-lined tanks: Are designed to minimize corrosion.

  • Digital displays: Easily monitor and control the operation of your tank; set the temperature of the water, set a vacation mode and other functions.

Why We Enjoy Shopping

“If money can’t buy happiness, why does it sometimes feel so good to buy stuff?” asks Kristin Bianco in his personal finance column at Fox News Network. Well, there is an answer for Kristin’s question if you search for it at the right place. That place is consumer psychology. Professor Kit Yarrow, professor of psychology and marketing at Golden Gate University in San Francisco, writing in Psychology Today names the good feeling that Kristin experience when buying stuff “retail therapy”. She says a recent study has found that more than half of Americans admit to engaging in “retail therapy.”

So, when your customers feel down, they go shopping to feel better…

Finding the joy of shopping

According to the emotional view of consumer decision-making, each of us is likely to associate deep feelings or emotions, such as joy, fear, love, hope, sexuality, fantasy and even a little ‘magic’, with certain purchases. Also, scientists have found that shopping does make some people feel good. It’s been reported that when a person shops, the brain releases the chemical dopamine. Dopamine is linked to feelings of satisfaction and pleasure and is released when you face new, exciting experiences. So, what do your customers pay for when they want to have “retail therapy”?

Recent survey results indicate that engagement in retail therapy is often driven by factors such as boredom and seasonal changes. As many as 66% of adults and 75% of teens indicate that shopping is a great cure for boredom, while 45% of adults revealed that the seasonal changes are the biggest motivator to go shopping.

If your customers really want to feel happy, they will go on a ‘shopping spree’. WiseGeek describes a shopping spree as “a playful” and “devil may care” attitude in a single shopping trip where lots of money is spent. A shopping spree is the action you take to start your ‘retail therapy’. But what do your customers say about the joy of shopping?

Customer insights about the joy of shopping

Here are some commentary and comments from customer’s experiences about the joy of shopping.

“I think the clothes I buy will make me happier. The storage bins, the throw pillows, perhaps a bottle of nail polish. And while it’s true for a day, it doesn’t bring me real, lasting happiness. It gives me a bit of a happy high: “I love this new dressssss! How cute and stylish am I!?” but then the excitement wears off and I want to buy something else… ” writes Ashley in her blog “Our Little Apartment”. The comment of Ashley supports the findings of the survey done by Ebates.

Customers, sometimes, are feeling guilty after a shopping spree. Here are some of the comments on Ashley’s blog:

Ashile says: “It is so true that in the moment we think buying some new it will make us happier. But truly, it is only momentary happiness”.

Marta says “We all have wasted money and resources and time on unneeded shopping. You know how I do now? I ask myself “do I REALLY need it?” “Would I come back tomorrow again to buy it?” “Is it likely that I’ll never find such a wonderful cloth again in the world? Ever?” then, I usually realize that I’m not going to buy anything, and I feel sort of liberated.”

Customers are feeling both positive and negative emotions at the same time before, during and after shopping. But what will the customer feels when she visits your shop?

Creating the right environment for joyful shopping

Previous studies have shown that consumers are influenced by their shopping environments which in turn influence consumers’ emotional states and purchases. The negative emotions consumers experience before the shopping process are soon forgotten when consumers immerse themselves in the shopping process and start visiting stores and examining the merchandise.

It is unlikely that a random purchase at any venue will have therapeutically value for people feeling down. Their shopping experience needs to reward them. Emotional customers seeking ‘retail therapy’ should visit your shop to reward themselves. There are some obvious things a retailer needs to do to create lasting shopping experiences for their customers.

  • Keep a wide range and a variety of products;
  • Keep products that are in ‘season’;
  • Make sure that there are always some items on promotion;
  • Try to create an atmosphere in your shop that will make the customers feel happy;
  • Provide the customers with excellent, friendly service and make the transactions hassle free;
  • Allow your customers to see, touch, rub, wear, taste and smell the products;
  • Keep your shop clean and tidy at all times;
  • Make sure that your shop is well well-lit and that there are enough cashiers at the pay points;
  • Play music that put customers in a good mood and give them stylish shopping bags when they check out

Lastly, “What are customers doing when they are feeling bored? They surf the internet and do some online shopping…

Concluding

It seems difficult to draw a line between ‘the joy of shopping’ and ‘compulsive buying’. Compulsive buying is described as a ‘addictive disorder’ whilst the joy of shopping is keeping our shops open. The question that we as retailers need to ask is what to do if we recognize some of our customers as compulsive buyers? Do we have a moral duty to warn them about it? Or to suggest help?

Shopping for Lingerie After Tummy Tucks

One of the fun experiences for patients who have healed from their tummy tucks is going shopping for lingerie. If you’re planning an abdominoplasty, you can probably relate to this experience. With a flabby, saggy belly lingerie shopping probably hasn’t been much fun in the past. Looking at your pre-op reflection in the dressing room mirror can be downright disheartening if you don’t like the way your mid-section looks. Once you have a flat stomach, your curves will look better than ever and it can be pretty thrilling to buy new lingerie. Taking your boyfriend or husband along can add to the adventure.

When to Shop

If you’re planning to have your abdominoplasty procedure performed soon, you may be eager to go shopping even before your operation. That’s not the best idea because you won’t know what your figure will truly look like until you have completely healed. Part of the recovery process after this operation includes wearing compression garments and allowing fluids to drain. You won’t be able to get the full effect until healing has taken place. Tummy tucks take a couple of months to completely recover from.

Who to Bring

It’s fun to bring a friend or partner who will share in your celebration of buying lingerie after your tummy tucks have healed. You can either bring them into the dressing room with you or model the lingerie for them. Often, lingerie shops have comfortable seating for companions of shoppers. Some boutiques offer champagne or wine. During your shopping spree, you might want to look at negligees, teddies, and other slinky items. After your surgery, all of these garments will look more flattering than ever before.

Where to Shop

Although you can find reasonably priced lingerie at chain stores and discount outlets, it’s a treat to shop at the fancy boutiques, at least initially. Buying your first slinky undergarments after your tummy tucks have healed should be the party that it is. After the initial celebratory shopping event, then you can go to the discount places but treat yourself to a pretty setting that carries lacy undergarments in every color of the rainbow. Bring your friend, sip your champagne, and enjoy your new figure.

After tummy tucks, buying lingerie can be fun for the first time. Looking in the mirror at your flat-bellied reflection and having your friend or partner along for the ride will be something you’ll always remember. This might be the first time that you truly love the way your body looks in lace.
